New S'pore tabloid faces tough fight<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Reuters): A new English-language newspaper hits
\nSingapore's streets on Friday, but analysts say the Today free
\ntabloid will find it hard to dent the dominance of incumbent
\nSingapore Press Holdings (SPH).<\/p>\n
Aimed at the city state's commuters, Today will provide a
\nfresh perspective and cheaper advertising, Ernest Wong, chief
\nexecutive officer of its publisher, state-owned MediaCorp of
\nSingapore (MCS), said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
But an analyst at a local research house questioned whether
\nits target readership of train commuters and housewives would
\nappeal to advertisers.<\/p>\n
\"In media, it's not just the number of readers but also the
\nquality of readers,\" the analyst said.<\/p>\n
The government granted MCS a newspaper license and in turn
\nallowed SPH to broadcast free-to-air television over two channels
\nand granted it two radio licenses.<\/p>",
