New science think tank launched<\/p>\n

The formation of a new science think tank, the Indonesian
\nScientists and Technologists Association (MITI) was announced on
\nSunday by former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the group's launch, Habibie said MITI was expected
\nto find new ways to develop the country.<\/p>\n
"It is about time the country had a scientific think tank and
\nthe government will support its research," Habibie was quoted by
\nAntara as saying.<\/p>\n
Indonesia would not prosper as an economic nation if it
\ncontinued to rely solely on natural resources.<\/p>\n
"Job opportunities for the country's 145 million workers can
\nnot be provided if the country counts on natural resources
\nalone," Habibie said.<\/p>\n
MITI chairman As Natio Lasman said the new organization would
\nprovide a place for scientists to exchange views and ideas and
\nparticipate in the country's development.<\/p>\n
Scientists had to learn to work together with businesses and
\ndevelop added-value export products, he said.<\/p>\n
"Scientists should aim to develop goods with an economic value
\nand not just concentrate on theoretical research."<\/p>\n
He welcomed the involvement of scientists at universities
\nacross the country.<\/p>\n
Also present at the opening ceremony were Coordinating
\nMinister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono, Research and Technology Minister Hatta Rajasa and
\nJustice and Welfare Party (PKS) chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid.<\/p>\n
Habibie, known for his obsession with developing Indonesia,
\nhas spearheaded other hi-tech development programs, including
\nIndonesia's failed airline manufacturer, PT Dirgantara.<\/p>\n
The manufacturer, which later went bust, laid off more than
\n6,000 workers, who continue to demand compensation from the
\ncompany.<\/p>",
