New schools to open on education day<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The celebration of this year's National
\nEducation Day on May 2 will be centered in Pontianak, West
\nKalimantan, with President Soeharto presenting awards and opening
\nnew schools.<\/p>\n
West Kalimantan Governor Aspar Aswin, after meeting with
\nPresident Soeharto at the Merdeka Palace yesterday, said the
\neducational Widyakrama awards would be presented to nine regents,
\nmayors and other regional leaders who have made outstanding
\ncontributions to the development of education.<\/p>\n
Soeharto will also launch National Book Month during the
\nceremony, which will be held at the local sports stadium, Aswin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"The President is expected to deliver a speech on the `Family
\nliteracy-awareness movement' planned by the National Family
\nPlanning Board, and further promote the nine-year compulsory
\neducation program,\" he announced.<\/p>\n
Indonesia extended its compulsory education from six to nine
\nyears last year. To begin with, the project was implemented in
\nselected areas having adequate facilities and resources.<\/p>\n
Soeharto will inaugurate several projects during his visit to
\nWest Kalimantan, including the Rp 6.5 billion (US$2.9 million)
\nSupadio Airport, the Rp 2.5 billion Pontianak state Technical
\nSecondary School and the Rp 13.8 billion Melamo and Tawan Tiga
\nbridges, all of which are government funded, and the Rp 6.2
\nbillion and $3.3 million Ketapang highway.<\/p>\n
Soeharto will also open the Taruna Bumi Katulistiwa Technical
\nSecondary School, a private-funded institution which costs some
\nRp 6 billion.<\/p>\n
Aswin said a short production depicting the people's efforts
\nin improving human resources through the nine-year compulsory
\neducation project will be staged by the Bali Dancing Academy
