New reason for Timika shooting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Armed Forces (ABRI) Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung
\nsaid yesterday that the soldier who shot dead 16 people, mostly
\nsoldiers, in Irian Jaya in April was suffering \"mental stress\",
\nnot tropical malaria as originally stated by a preliminary
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
According to Feisal, Second Lt. Sanurip started shooting after
\nhis request to help take the bodies of two soldiers from Timika
\nto Sorong was rejected.<\/p>\n
But in April, quoting the findings of a preliminary
\ninvestigation, ABRI's general affairs chief Lt. Gen. Soeyono said
\nthe trigger-happy soldier was temporarily deranged by a bout of
\nmalaria when he indiscriminately shot people at the Timika
\nairport hangar.<\/p>\n
Sanurip had just completed his night shift at the Timika
\nhangar when he approached the Twin Otter airplane which was to
\ntake the soldiers' bodies. He was told to go away because the
\nbodies' freight had already been arranged.<\/p>\n
\"Then Sanurip opened fire on the people around him. He was
\noverpowered after being shot in the leg,\" Feisal said at a
\nhearing of the House of Representatives' Commission I on
\nsecurity.<\/p>\n
The death toll rose to 19 when four more victims died in
\nhospital several days after the incident.<\/p>\n
Sanurip has been psychologically and medically examined and
\nwill be brought before a military tribunal, he said. (pan)<\/p>",
