New rail project starts next year<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The construction of a light rail line that will
\nlink Pondok Labu in South Jakarta with Kota Station in North
\nJakarta will start next year, Director General of Highway
\nConstruction Soeharsono Martakim said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Soeharsono said that the draft plan of the project, which is
\ncalled the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system, is now in its final
\nstages.<\/p>\n
The LRT is to be built by PT Citra Lamtoro Gung, a company
\nowned by President Soeharto's eldest daughter, Siti Hardiyanti
\nRukmana.<\/p>\n
The company plans to construct a freeway alongside the line,
\nSoeharsono said.<\/p>\n
He said the LRT will intersect with the freeway at a ring road
\nin Lebak Bulus, not far from Pondok Labu.<\/p>\n
Speaking after delivering a speech at a seminar on subway
\ndevelopment, Soeharsono said construction work on the LRT will
\ncommence before work begins on the planned Blok M-Kota subway
\nproject.<\/p>\n
The subway project is to be constructed by a consortium of
\nJapanese and European companies.<\/p>\n
Soeharsono said the government is giving priority to the
\nconstruction of the LRT because more thorough preparations are
\nneeded for the subway, which will be Indonesia's first.<\/p>\n
Unlike the LRT, the subway will require a number of supporting
\nsystems, including ventilation, lighting, fire control,
\ncommunications and drainage, Soeharsono said.<\/p>\n
The first phase of the subway project will be the construction
\nof a 14-kilometer tunnel linking Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Gajah Mada,
\npassing beneath the Jl. M.H. Thamrin and Harmoni area. The
\nproject is expected to cost Rp 200 billion (approximately US$87.7
\nmillion) per km.<\/p>\n
He said the construction of the LRT and the subway should not
\naffect traffic flow or cleanliness in the city. (03)<\/p>",
