New leadership called for<\/p>\n
From the perspective of law and democracy, all citizens,
\nincluding B.J. Habibie, are entitled to propose their candidacy
\nfor the presidency. But let us consider the achievements of the
\ntransitional government under President Habibie in its law-
\nenforcement efforts.<\/p>\n
From the perspective of human rights, there have been the
\nfollowing cases that caused widespread notice and discussion:
\nMarsinah, Udin, July 27, 1996, the abduction of activists, the
\nTrisakti incident, the May 1998 riots (and the recommendations by
\nthe fact-finding team), the Banyuwangi slayings, the Semanggi
\nincident. All of these have meanwhile been shelved.<\/p>\n
Although Decision No. XI\/1998 by the People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR) refers to governance free from corruption,
\ncollusion and nepotism, the government continues to mislead the
\npeople with disgusting shams. There has never been a settlement
\nthat takes into account the people's idea of justice.<\/p>\n
The Gandrik theater recently performed the play Brigade Maling
\n(Thieves Brigade). Previously, employees of a state-owned
\ntransport company admitted that they had stolen from their own
\ncompany. It was an honest admission.<\/p>\n
Jeffrey Winters has recommended that we ask for a reduction of
\nthe debt owed to the World Bank, because a minimum of 30 percent
\nof the loans from the institution have been corrupted. But has
\nthe government the credibility, or the bargaining position, to
\nask for it?<\/p>\n
I would like to quote the following:<\/p>\n
72.8 percent of the people are not satisfied with the Habibie
\ngovernment (poll in Kompas, May 17).<\/p>\n
78 percent of the people did not vote for Golkar in the
\ngeneral election (and 90 percent of fraud is believed to have
\nbeen committed by Golkar).<\/p>\n
It is clear that the people want an authentic new leadership,
\nand for that purpose there must be a change of government and its
\ninfrastructure. Therefore, members of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly (MPR), which will convene in November, should refrain
\nfrom involvement in political games and conspiracies. They should
\nmaintain their ethics and morality and let their consciences
\nspeak. They should remember that their responsibility lies with
\nthe nation and the state.<\/p>\n
