New justice named in Akbar's case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Judge Abdurrahman Saleh has been appointed to replace
\ncolleague Laica Marzuki to sit on the panel of five judges
\nhearing the graft case of Akbar Tandjung, the Speaker of the
\nHouse of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice Bagir Manan said on Tuesday that he and Paulus
\nE. Lotulung, who heads the panel of judges, had agreed to appoint
\nAbdurrahman, a lawyer who once led the Indonesia Legal Aid
\nFoundation (YLBHI), as one of five judges handling Akbar's
\nappeal.<\/p>\n
\"The appointment was based on his competency and knowledge,\"
\nhe told reporters in his office.<\/p>\n
Laica is a judge in the newly established Constitutional
\nCourt, where he has been elected deputy chairman.<\/p>\n
The appeal of Akbar was examined earlier by four judges,
\nincluding Laica.<\/p>\n
As chairman of the panel, Paulus would be the last to examine
\nthe case. After Paulus examines it, the five judges would hold
\ndiscussions before arriving at a final decision.<\/p>\n
The issuance of the verdict, however, would take longer to
\nallow Abdurrahman examine the case. Bagir had said that the court
\nwas expected to present its verdict on Akbar's case in August or
\nSeptember this year.<\/p>\n
Akbar, who is also the chairman of the Golkar Party, has been
\nsentenced to three years in prison for misappropriating Rp 40
\nbillion in Bulog funds. He remains free pending the decision of
