New Japanese school opened in Tangerang<\/p>\n
TANGERANG, West Java (JP): Minister of Education and Culture
\nWardiman Djojonegoro opened the Jakarta Japanese School yesterday
\nin Pondok Aren.<\/p>\n
Japanese expatriates do not need to worry about their
\nchildren's education anymore when they are assigned to Indonesia,
\nthe minister and Japanese ambassador Taizo Watanabe said.<\/p>\n
The Japanese school is one way to provide international school
\nservices to ensure that expatriates' children acquire the same
\nstandard of education as at home, Wardiman said.<\/p>\n
Japanese students here can also be free from worry, Wardiman
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"It is for these essential reasons that the Government has
\nalways lent its full support to the concept of international
\nschools for the expatriate community,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The school, with a 6,820-square-meter sports field, is in the
\nBintaro Jaya housing complex, where the British International
\nSchool is also located.<\/p>\n
The Japanese school has 1,265 students following kindergarten,
\nelementary school and junior high school classes.<\/p>\n
Students sang Japanese and Indonesian songs at yesterday's
\nceremony, which ended with a dynamic traditional dance, the
\nSaman, from Aceh.<\/p>\n
The rapid dance featuring junior high school students was
\n\"very good,\" a visitor from Aceh said.<\/p>\n
The Japanese school was moved from its former site in Pasar
\nMinggu, South Jakarta, in April.<\/p>\n
It was founded in 1969 with 11 students in a rented house in
\nTebet, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
PT Jaya Obayashi began building the new school in 1994 which
\nwas designed by Pacific Consultants International.<\/p>\n
The three-story school, run by the Jakarta Japanese School
\nMaintenance Foundation, has two swimming schools, two gymnasiums
\nand four music rooms. There are also two \"discussion rooms,\"
\nhalls and meeting rooms.<\/p>\n
A small amphitheater, with a map of Indonesia as its focal
\npoint, is in the playground.<\/p>\n
Wardiman and Watanabe praised the school for exposing its
\nstudents to Indonesia through Indonesian language sessions and
\ncultural exchanges with local students.<\/p>\n
\"As you have been taught in school, Japan plays an important
\nrole in the world. For this reason we must promote good relations
\nwith other countries, particularly in Asia,\" Watanabe said.<\/p>\n
Cultural exchanges involving the Japanese students \"make me
\nvery happy,\" Watanabe said.<\/p>\n
The exchanges included a camping trip in September with
\nstudents of the private Al Azhar Islamic school. This was where
\nthe Japanese students first saw the Saman dance.<\/p>\n
\"My body was aching all over when we first practiced it,\" one
\nof the dancers, Mai Tokusa, said.<\/p>\n
Watanabe told the students he hoped their school years in
\nIndonesia would give them an important memory of an experience
\nwhich they could not get in Japan.<\/p>\n
Keita Ono, the head of the students' organization, said the
\nstudents were \"proud\" of their responsibility to help preserve
\ngood relations between Japan and their host country.<\/p>\n
Tangerang regent Saifullah Abdulrachman said the good
\ninternational schools in the regency would \"hopefully drive us to
\nbuild better schools for our children.\" (anr)<\/p>",
