New international forestry site gets start<\/p>\n
BOGOR, West Java (JP): Minister of Forestry Djamaloedin
\nSoeryohadikoesoemo planted seven different trees at the site of
\nthe new headquarters for the Center for International Forestry
\nResearch (Cifor) on Monday.<\/p>\n
Djamaloedin told reporters that around Rp 5 billion (US$2.33
\nmillion) in funds had been raised to build the headquarters, and
\nthe government itself contributed Rp 3.2 billion to the first
\nphase of construction.<\/p>\n
Totally, the government has committed Rp 8 billion to the
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
The minister said the government will also contribute around
\n$100,000 to $200,000 annually of Cifor's $6 million budget and
\nhas set aside 100,000 hectares of forest in East Kalimantan for
\nresearch.<\/p>\n
The planned headquarters is located on 10 hectares near the
\nBogor Institute of Agriculture's campus at Darmaga in Bogor, and
\nwill accommodate its 150 employees and scientists.<\/p>\n
The Cifor's Board Chairman Bo Bengtsson said the headquarters
\nwill undertake research necessary to ensure that forests are
\nmanaged in a way that is sustainable and that brings maximum
\nbenefit to the poorer sectors of society in tropical countries.<\/p>\n
Established in May 1993, Cifor will look into both social and
\neconomic issues to support the development of sound forest
\nmanagement policies and with increased knowledge of the related
\nbiological and technological issues.<\/p>\n
Cifor is an international independent research center
\nsponsored by the governments of Australia, Sweden, Switzerland
\nand the United States, and supported by 18 donor countries, the
\nWorld Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation.<\/p>\n
According to Djamaloedin, Cifor's research results will not be
\nautomatically available to the international community as the
\nIndonesian government and Cifor have agreed not to transfer
\nresearch results without prior approval from the government and
\nthe Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).<\/p>\n

The minister said the establishment of Cifor's headquarters in
\nIndonesia is expected to counter campaigns against the country's
\ntimber industry because Cifor experts will be able to see how
\nforest resources are managed.<\/p>\n
"From now on, Indonesian political statements concerning its
\nforest management will be fully backed by research," he said.<\/p>\n
The minister also said that Indonesia supports timber eco-
\nlabeling as long as it is applied to all types of timber.<\/p>\n
"Indonesia has the firm determination to pursue sound timber
\neco-labeling. The Ministry of Forestry is preparing institutional
\naspects of timber eco-labeling in cooperation with relevant
\ngovernmental institutions, the private sector as well as non-
\ngovernmental organizations," he said.(03)<\/p>",
