New intellectual group founded<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java (JP): A new organization of
\nintellectuals, calling itself the Association of Intellectuals
\nfor Pancasila Development (PCPP), was launched on the weekend.<\/p>\n
The group, chaired by Rubijanto Misman, proclaims itself an
\n"open and non-political" organization whose membership is not
\nbased on race, ethnicity or religion.<\/p>\n
"An intellectual does not have to have academic predicates
\nsuch as professor or doctor. A farmer who discovers techniques
\nthat can be used by other farmers can regard himself an
\nintellectual and can become a member," Rubijanto told reporters
\nat the inauguration of the group on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
Rubijanto said his group does not intended to challenge the
\nexistence of some current intellectual organizations, or to
\nbecome an alternative to those organizations.<\/p>\n
This was a clear reference to the Association of Indonesian
\nMoslem Intellectuals, which has become influential since it was
\nfounded five years ago. The Moslem association is headed by B.J.
\nHabibie, the state minister of research and technology.<\/p>\n
The chief objective of PCPP is to help empower the people in
\nthe current era of rapid globalization, he said.<\/p>\n
Other intellectuals present at the PCPP launch included Anarn
\nSiswowijoto, Soeyatno Wongsokenongo, Soedjito, Darjono Watiman,
\nMulyo Wahyadi, Bambang Prijono, Iswanto and Hartarti Prawironoto.<\/p>\n
Rubijanto said the new forum hopes to eventually set up
\nbranches throughout Indonesia. (wah)<\/p>",
