New installed population chief sets database target<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Newly installed chief of the recently formed
\nNational Population Agency, Rozy Munir, said on Monday he wanted
\nto set up a comprehensive system and database of the country's
\npopulation that could also ease administrative procedures when
\napplying for various licenses and identification cards.<\/p>\n
\"My target is to have an exhaustive population database that
\ncan later facilitate us in creating personal identification
\ncards, driver's licenses and passports,\" Rozy said.<\/p>\n
The former state minister for the development of state-owned
\nenterprises and investments was installed on Monday as head of
\nthe new agency.<\/p>\n
\"But this is a long-term project, for now this new board will
\nfirst function as a body to formulate policies in population
\ndevelopment,\" Rozy said, deflating any lofty perceptions of his
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Based on Presidential Decree No. 43\/2001, the agency is
\ndirectly responsible to the President but its daily work is
\ncoordinated with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Regional
\nAutonomy.<\/p>\n
The decree also stipulates that among the agency's tasks are
\nto formulate and determine policies regarding population, study
\nthe dynamics of population growth and develop an information
\nsystem and administration on population.<\/p>\n
The agency's operations would be financed from funds allocated
\nfrom the ministry's budget.<\/p>\n
The agency will work from the space of the former ministry of
\ntransmigration office in Kalibata, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Initially the agency will function as a steering body for
\nlocal public records offices' across the country.<\/p>\n
Rozy was installed on Monday by Minister of Home Affairs and
\nRegional Autonomy Surjadi Soedirdja.<\/p>\n
Surjadi also installed Prapto Hadi as the agency's first
\nsecretary, Rohadi Haryanto as deputy of population planning,
\nHarto Nurdin as deputy of population dynamics and Dahlan
\nKadarisman as deputy for population information and
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
In his address, Surjadi said that though the country is being
\nhit by political turmoil the government remains obliged to serve
\nnon-political fields, including creating better public services.<\/p>\n
\"The establishment of this body is part of our hope to create
\na better administration to serve the public's needs,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Also attending the ceremony was Minister of Manpower and
\nTransmigration Al-Hilal Hamdi. (emf)<\/p>",
