New group to help pharmaceutical<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Five companies have established a consortium for
\nthe production of raw materials for pharmaceuticals which will
\nhelp increase the efficiency of the country's pharmaceuticals
\nmanufacturers, an executive says.<\/p>\n
The president of PT Indofarma, Gunawan Pranoto, said yesterday
\nthat the consortium had been established, in response to a call
\nfrom Minister of Health Sujudi, by Indofarma, PT Kimia Farma, PT
\nKalbe Farma, the Gemala Group and PT Tempo.<\/p>\n
Gunawan said the consortium was still considering which raw
\nmaterials would be produced to meet the long-term targets of the
\nIndonesian pharmaceuticals industry.<\/p>\n
The consortium has also yet to decide on the technology to be
\nemployed.<\/p>\n
\"We wouldn't want technology which will quickly be outdated,\"
\nhe said. \"The consortium's plant is expected to produce more than
\none type of raw material.\"<\/p>\n
The plant, which is expected to require some Rp 10 billion
\n(US$4.5 million) in initial investment, will be managed jointly
\nby the five companies, he said.<\/p>\n
Gunawan said the consortium was exploring the possibility of
\nrevamping the Gemala Group's pharmaceutical plant in Gresik, East
\nJava, which used to produce pharmaceuticals under license from
\nBayer, Germany.<\/p>\n
Indonesian pharmaceutical companies currently import most of
\ntheir raw materials. Indofarma, for example, currently imports
\nmore than 80 percent of its raw materials from Japan, China,
\nIndia and European countries.<\/p>\n
Gunawan told reporters that Indofarma planned, this year, to
\nstart exporting its products to a number of countries, including
\nMyanmar, Vietnam, Russia, Yemen and Sudan.<\/p>\n
Kalbe Farma currently exports pharmaceuticals to several
\nAfrican and Southeast Asian countries. (pwn)<\/p>",
