New fund-raising program for sports prepared<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The office of the state minister of youth
\naffairs and sports is looking into launching a fund-raising
\nprogram, involving distribution of coupons and allocation of
\nprizes, to support sports development nationwide.<\/p>\n
State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mahadi Sinambela
\nsaid in a hearing with House of Representatives Commission VI,
\nwith jurisdiction including sports, that the Sports and Humanity
\nprogram (OKE) was being prepared by his office.<\/p>\n
Sinambela said the Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI)
\nrecommended the program, which was jointly coordinated with the
\nformer ministry of social services and a private institution, PT
\nProvicia.<\/p>\n
\"We are still working on the program. I have yet to study OKE.
\nIf many people are against this program, we will not proceed. We
\nneed a program which could support sports development,\" he said
\nafter the hearing.<\/p>\n
OKE would operate with members of the public receiving coupons
\nwhen they shop at designated supermarkets.<\/p>\n
\"Customers can pick their favorite sports as outlined in the
\ncoupons. They will get prize money if they win, but I don't know
\nthe amount,\" Sinambela said.<\/p>\n
The minister's secretary, J.B. Wirawan, told the hearing that
\nthe program was presented to the former members of Commission VI,
\nCommission VII and MUI. The state minister's office will promote
\nthe program to the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI).<\/p>\n
\"We want related institutions to help us in evaluating that
\nthe contents of the program do not include gambling and will not
\ndupe the public. We are cautious about not repeating past
\nmistakes. We have received recommendations from Commission VI,
\nCommission VII and MUI,\" Wirawan said.<\/p>\n
Then minister of social services Yustika S. Baharsyah bowed to
\npublic pressure to cancel her ministerial decree in April which
\npermitted PT Lintas Artha Raya to launch its Analisa Olahraga
\n(Sports Analysis) television quiz.<\/p>\n
The minister's decision to issue the decree was supported by
\nthe Jakarta chapter of MUI, which said the quiz adhered to the
\nIslamic law on trading.<\/p>\n
MUI's headquarters annulled the Jakarta branch's
\nrecommendation, saying the venture included usury, which is
\nunlawful in Islam.<\/p>\n
Sinambela also told the hearing that he would consider the
\nmembers' idea to transfer management of Gelora Senayan from the
\nState Secretariat to his office. The Gelora Senayan Management
\nBoard (BPGS) is responsible to the president.<\/p>\n
\"I can understand this idea, but I will discuss it first with
