Timor violations unveiled<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A researcher said on Thursday that more than<br>\n1,000 East Timorese women had been raped or sexually assaulted<br>\nsince the process of integrating the region into Indonesia began<br>\n22 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Aida Milasari from the Yogyakarta-based Tjoet Nyak Dhien<br>\nFoundation also alleged that Armed Forces (ABRI) personnel were<br>\nresponsible for the violations.<\/p>\n<p>In her study entitled Violence against women in East Timor,<br>\nAida found that many women had been sexually abused and that many<br>\nmore had been left widowed by widespread arbitrarily killings in<br>\nthe province.<\/p>\n<p>Aida was quoted in a statement issued by Solidamor, a<br>\nsolidarity movement for peace in East Timor, as saying that<br>\nviolence against women in East Timor was a logical consequence of<br>\nABRI's presence there.<\/p>\n<p>Aida presented the results of her study during a discussion<br>\nheld in Jakarta on Thursday. The event was attended by 100 East<br>\nTimorese activists.<\/p>\n<p>\"Violence against women has received less attention than the<br>\nissues of a referendum and independence for East Timor,\" Aida was<br>\nquoted as saying in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Human rights activists have also said that hundreds of women<br>\nwere raped in Aceh during the military operation there. The<br>\noperation was brought to an end in August.<\/p>\n<p>Former East Timor governor Mario Viegas Carrascalao praised<br>\nAida's study and said the real situation was even worse. He cited<br>\nwhat he called \"the Cararas tragedy\", where so many of the men in<br>\none particular village were slain that the settlement became<br>\nknown as \"the village of widows.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said he was sure the atrocities were not committed at the<br>\norders of military commanders, but by renegade individual<br>\nservicemen. \"Indonesian people have a duty to end the tragedy in<br>\nEast Timor,\" Mario added.
