New E. Jakarta mayor installed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Andi Mappaganty has been installed as the new
\nmayor of East Jakarta, replacing Sudarsono, who returns to his
\nformer post in the Armed Forces Headquarters.<\/p>\n
Mappaganty was ordered by Governor Sutiyoso to devote his
\nattention to providing those in his ward with enough food to see
\nthem through the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
\"You should pay serious attention to social safety net
\nprograms which are intended to prevent any further outbreaks of
\nsocial unrest,\" he said during Wednesday's ceremony marking the
\nnew mayor's appointment.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said social safety net programs already introduced by
\nthe city administration included labor intensive projects to
\nimprove public facilities, drain cleaning, planting vegetables on
\nvacant plots of land and granting permission for street cafes to
\nopen in certain areas.<\/p>\n
\"Other programs include allowing local people to hold self-
\ndefense programs in residential areas in cooperation with the
\nsecurity forces,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Mappaganty, a former deputy mayor of East Jakarta, was born in
\nUjungpandang, South Sulawesi, on July 28, 1942 and is the father
