        "content": "<p>New drug against AIDS considered<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand, which may be home to as many as<br>\n800,000 people infected with HIV, is considering approval of a<br>\ndrug with a powerful record against the virus, a government AIDS<br>\nexpert said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Abbot has studied this drug for years and the U.S. FDA<br>\napproved it this year,\" said Chaiyos Kunanusont, a medical expert<br>\nwith the Public Health Ministry's AIDS Division, referring to the<br>\nU.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Ritonavir, a protease inhibitor for the Human Immune-<br>\ndeficiency Virus (HIV), is currently under consideration by the<br>\nThai FDA, the Bangkok office of the manufacturer, U.S.-based<br>\nAbbott Laboratories said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Protease inhibitors work differently and more effectively than<br>\ncurrent treatments, blocking the development and reproduction of<br>\nthe virus which leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome<br>\n(AIDS) rather than letting it reach maturity in the bloodstream,<br>\nit said.<\/p>",
