New daily to hit streets next week<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakartans will get another daily afternoon
\nnewspaper on Tuesday when Suara Independen (Independent Voice)
\nbegins to regularly hit the streets.<\/p>\n
The daily's chief editor, Taufik Darusman, said 10,000 copies
\nwould initially be printed for distribution.<\/p>\n
The newspaper was officially launched on Aug. 17, independence
\nday, but will only formally begin circulating on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"It will be distributed throughout the country but we will
\nfocus on Java first," said Taufik, who is also managing editor of
\nthe Indonesia Observer English language daily.<\/p>\n
Taufik said the new daily would give equal coverage to
\npolitics and economics.<\/p>\n
"In the spirit of reform we want to produce good news to
\nencourage people in the middle of the crisis," he said.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, Suara Independen will enter an already crowded
\nmarket for afternoon dailies. Berita Buana, Harian Terbit and
\nSuara Pembaruan are all established publications in this niche of
\nthe newspaper market.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Taufik was optimistic about the prospects for
\nthe eight-page daily.<\/p>\n
"We spotted an opportunity in the afternoon daily market," he
\nsaid, adding that the daily could go to 12 pages in October.<\/p>\n
"Suara Independen is aiming at the upper middle class market,"
\nTaufik said.<\/p>\n
The new paper's managing editor is former Antara news agency
\njournalist Riris Irawati.<\/p>\n
Taufik said the paper currently has an editorial team of 15
\npeople, a third of whom work for the Indonesian Observer.<\/p>\n
Taufik said that the name of the daily was initially just
\ngoing to be Independen, however when they submitted an
\napplication for a publishing license they discovered that the
\nname was already being used by a newspaper in Lampung. (01)<\/p>",
