New curriculum to be implemented<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Education and Culture says a new
\nelementary and secondary education curriculum, an improved
\nversion of the 1994 curriculum currently in place, will be
\nimplemented at the beginning of the 1999\/2000 academic year in
\nmid-July.<\/p>\n
After the inauguration of several officials on Wednesday,
\nDirector General of Basic and Secondary Education Indra Jati Sidi
\ntold Antara that a team was currently preparing the curriculum.<\/p>\n
\"The new curriculum is a simplification of some of the
\nprevious material, an enrichment. (It will be achieved by) adding
\nother material, and the elimination of some material which
\noverlaps with that contained in the higher education level.<\/p>\n
\"For instance, some material for elementary schools will be
\ntaken out because it overlaps with the curriculum for junior high
\nschools,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indra said the new curriculum would be fully in place at the
\nstart of the 2000\/2001 academic year, which was why the team
\nwould continue its work on the project until then.<\/p>\n
Indra discounted fears that the new curriculum would burden
\nparents. He said current textbooks would still be used because
\nthe new curriculum did not differ markedly from the old one.<\/p>\n
He said the government had considered the range of obstacles
\nthat usually accompanied a curriculum change, including the
\navailability of funds for the production of new textbooks,
\nparents' readiness to buy new books, and book publishers ability
\nto produce new books.<\/p>\n
Indra said teachers would not need special training to put the
\nnew curriculum into practice. \"There's no fundamental change ...
\nso it's generally easy.\"<\/p>\n
However, the Ministry of Education and Culture has prepared
\nsupplementary material for teachers -- to be distributed at the
\nend of this month -- to supplement their current teaching
\nmaterial. For instance, there will be additional information
\nabout the 1965 aborted coup attempt by the outlawed Indonesian
\nCommunist Party (PKI).<\/p>\n
The 1994 curriculum was launched by then minister of education
\nand culture Wardiman Djojonegoro. It was designed to meet growing
\nindustry needs by providing skilled human resources based on a
\n\"link and match\" orientation in which schools would provide basic
\nvocational training to students entering a specific occupation.<\/p>\n
The 1994 curriculum replaced the 1984 one, which focused on an
\nactive learning process by students facilitated by their
\nteachers. However, the 1994 curriculum has received a barrage of
\ncriticism for being too centralistic and rigid.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, Minister of Education and Culture Juwono
\nSudarsono installed Endro Sumarjo to replace Soedijarto as
\nDirector General of Extracurricular Activities and Sport, and I
\nGusti Ngurah Anom to replace Edi Sedyawati as the Director
\nGeneral of Culture.<\/p>\n
Also sworn in were Haris Sukendar, who replaced Hasan Muarif
\nAmbary as the head of the Center for the Studies of National
\nArchaeology, Willem Uda who replaced Soeratmo as the deputy
\ninspector general of the Ministry of Education and Culture, and
\nTrijado who is now secretary to Endro Sumarjo's office. (swe)<\/p>",
