        "content": "<p>New bridge affects river transportation<\/p>\n<p>BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: The Barito river transportation<br>\nhas lost its popularity since the new bridge was opened last<br>\nweek.<\/p>\n<p>The owners of ferries and speedboats said yesterday that<br>\nbusiness had been slack, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Ferries and speedboats were the only means of transportation<br>\nfor people who wanted to go from South to Central Kalimantan. But<br>\nnow that the bridge has opened ferry and boat businesses are very<br>\nslow,\" a ferry owner said.<\/p>\n<p>Owners of speedboats plying the Banjarmasin-Palangkaraya<br>\n(Central Kalimantan) and Banjarmasin-Kapuas (Central Kalimantan)<br>\nroutes also voiced their complaints, saying the number of<br>\npassengers had drastically dropped. People preferred to travel by<br>\ncar than by boat or ferry, they added.<\/p>\n<p>The 1.82 kilometer bridge was inaugurated by President<br>\nSoeharto on April 23.<\/p>\n<p>A ferry owner said he earned Rp 7,000 per day before the<br>\nbridge opened. He said his earnings had dropped significantly,<br>\nbut did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>Many speedboat owners said they planned to lower the fare to<br>\nlure passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The current speedboat fare for the Banjarmasin-Palangkaraya<br>\nroute is Rp 22,000 per passenger, while the Banjarmasin-Kapuas<br>\nroute is Rp 5,000 per person.
