        "content": "<p>New board of social scientists<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Association for Social Sciences<br>\nDevelopment (HIPIIS) yesterday introduced its new executive<br>\nboard.<\/p>\n<p>The association groups intellectuals from various universities<br>\nand state institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Sofian Effendi, Soetandyo Wignjosoebroto, Gunawan<br>\nSumodiningrat and A. Malik Fajar were among those elected for the<br>\n1997-2001 membership at the association's congress in Medan,<br>\nNorth Sumatra, in March.<\/p>\n<p>Sofyan is an advisor to State Minister for Research and<br>\nTechnology B.J. Habibie. Soetandyo is a member of the National<br>\nCommission on Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>The new chairman, Muljanto Sumardi, said the association was<br>\nready to work with the government to identify problems and offer<br>\nsolutions.<\/p>\n<p>At the Medan congress, President Soeharto criticized social<br>\nscientists for unsubstantiated, hasty analysis. They were accused<br>\nof not helping prevent social problems.<\/p>\n<p>In a further effort to understand local problems, the congress<br>\ndecided to set up chapters in various regions. (03)<\/p>",
