'New approach needed to eliminate waste'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian industry needs to adopt new
\napproaches to manufacture if it is to effectively cut pollution
\nand industrial waste, Minister for Environment Sarwono
\nKusumaatmadja said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said that without new ways of thinking about
\nmanufacturing, industrial waste problems would remain \"despite
\ngreatly improved environmental management by local industries\".<\/p>\n
\"With present waste management approaches, the amount of waste
\nwill keep increasing no matter how well the industries handle the
\nproblem,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"A breakthrough in thinking is needed, because
\nindustrialization can't be stopped,\" Sarwono said.<\/p>\n
Sarwono, speaking at a press conference on the upcoming third
\nInternational Conference on Zero Emissions, said an example of
\nthis was the Zero Emissions Research Initiative (ZERI) concept.<\/p>\n
He said he has \"a gut feeling\" that the ZERI, which was
\ndeveloped by the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo in 1994
\n\"will be a trend\" in the next five or ten years.<\/p>\n
\"If industry followed the ZERI approach, waste could be
\nreduced to zero, productivity increased, products diversified,
\nand employment created,\" Sarwono said.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said that ZERI offered two approaches (one for use
\nwith the \"traditional\" appropriate technology and the other with
\n\"modern\" technology.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia already used the first approach in Long-Yam
\nfishing and farming industries in West Java, in which no
\nindustrial waste has gone unused.<\/p>\n
\"If this kind farming activity joins the Proper program, it
\ncould have got the Gold label,\" Sarwono joked, referring to
\nProper Prokasih or the program for pollution control, evaluation
\nand rating, evaluates the quality of waste water from a factory
\ndischarged into rivers.<\/p>\n
Director of ZERI Gunter Pauli, speaking after the minister,
\nsaid that most of the time when he meets businessmen to talk
\nabout ZERI concept most of them said it was impossible to cut
\nwaste to zero.<\/p>\n
\"Or even if it is possible, they would say it is expensive. It
\nmakes no sense to me,\" he said, adding that the ZERI represents a
\nshift in the concept of industries' \"linear models\" in which
\nwaste are considered normal to integrated systems in which
\neverything has its use.<\/p>\n
Gunter said Malaysia's oil palm industry Golden Hope
\nPlantations Berhad had worked towards \"zero emissions,\" by
\nutilizing all the palm tree instead of \"just using eight percent
\nof the tree to produce palm oil.\"<\/p>\n
The industry has been very profitable making use of only eight
\npercent of the palm tree.<\/p>\n
\"Golden Hope is one of the most successful industrial
\ncompanies to maximize the utilization of the biomass of the palm
\ntree,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Gunter said ZERI is not a concept of pollution control but
\nrather a practical approach to satisfy mankind's needs in a more
\nenvironmentally sensitive manner, by applying science and
\ntechnology and involving government, business and academy.<\/p>\n
The third international conference on zero emissions will be
\nheld here from June 5 to 7. About 450 delegates -- including
\nexperts, industrialists and scientists -- from home and abroad
\nwill take part in the conference. (08)<\/p>",
