        "content": "<p>New anesthesia procedure for painless labor unveiled<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Doctors here are introducing a new anesthesia<br>\ntechnique which would allow expectant mothers to have natural<br>\nchildbirth with less, perhaps even no, pain.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors hope the introduction of the new procedure will help<br>\nreduce the number of mothers who opt for a caesarean section due<br>\nto their fear of suffering pain during labor.<\/p>\n<p>It is said that the pain-reducing anesthesia will suppress the<br>\nstrain during labor but still allow a mother to remain conscious,<br>\nthus allowing her still to feel natural contractions.<\/p>\n<p>The procedure, called Intrathecal Labor Analgesia (ILA), has<br>\nactually been in limited use in hospitals here since last year;<br>\nhowever anesthesiologists hope that it can be more widely used in<br>\nall hospitals and maternity clinics.<\/p>\n<p>Gunawarman Basuki, chairman of the Indonesian Society of<br>\nAnesthesiologists (IDSAI), maintained that the procedure \"has no<br>\ndamaging impact on mothers or the newborn\".<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a media briefing here on Tuesday to publicize the<br>\nanesthetic procedure, Gunawan, however, conceded that there<br>\nremained some controversy regarding the method, pointing to those<br>\nwho believe that painless labor violates the natural order and<br>\neven some faiths that believe that women are supposed to feel<br>\nsome pain while giving birth.<\/p>\n<p>Anesthetist Susilo revealed that the ILA technique, via an<br>\ninjection at the intrathecal spine, can effectively block part of<br>\nthe brain related to pain awareness for about 12 hours, without<br>\ndisabling the mother's motoric nerves.<\/p>\n<p>Based on his research on 62 patients at a privately run<br>\nmaternity clinic in Jakarta between July and November 2000, no<br>\nevident side effects were found.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's relatively easy and costs only one quarter of what<br>\ncaesarean surgery can cost the patient,\" he added.
