Netherlands to offer 200 full scholarships<\/p>\n

The Dutch government will grant up to 200 full scholarships this
\nyear to Indonesian professionals to take post-graduate studies at
\nvarious universities in the Netherlands, according to an
\nofficial.<\/p>\n
Under a program called StuNed, funded by the Netherlands
\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs, the scholarships are available for
\nmid-career professionals, including government officials,
\nlecturers, non-governmental organization activists and
\njournalists.<\/p>\n
\"Our overall aim for the scholarships program is to help
\nimprove less-developed countries in the empowerment of manpower,
\nthus (help) achieve the United Nation's Millennium Development
\nGoals to halve global poverty by 2015,\" said Monique Soesman,
\nhead of scholarships department at Netherlands' Education Centre
\n(NEC), which has been assigned to run the program.<\/p>\n
Monique was speaking at a press conference held on Saturday to
\nannounce the opening of the two-day Holland Education Fair 2005.<\/p>\n
StuNed, a program specifically for Indonesia, was developed
\nafter former chief economics minister Kwik Kian Gie, a previous
\nstudent in the Netherlands, lodged a request in 2000 to the
\nNetherlands to run a scholarship program for Indonesia to help
\nwith its development.<\/p>\n
Before that year, most Indonesians sought scholarships offered
\nby, among others, the United States, British and Australian
\ngovernments.<\/p>\n
NEC has conducted road shows in 29 cities in Java, Sumatra,
\nKalimantan, Papua, Sulawesi, East and West Nusa Tenggara to
\npromote StuNed.<\/p>\n
The subjects available under the StuNed program include
\neducation, water management, sanitation and the environment,
\nsociety empowerment, good governance and human rights, gender,
\nculture (strengthening cultural identity) and public health,
\nwhich focuses on HIV\/AIDS-related issues and reproductive health.<\/p>\n
\"The Netherlands has high quality in education. Our democratic
\nand egalitarian society and culture, where democracy instead of
\nhierarchy dominates the country's lifestyle, is also practiced in
\nthe education system,\" said Monique.<\/p>\n
\"Teachers and students have almost the same level, thus
\nencouraging good discussions between the two.\"<\/p>\n
Monique said that because of the Netherlands' long history in
\neducation, where the first university was founded in 1575, modern
\nteaching methods had evolved, enabling them to receive 17 Nobel
