Netherlands gives US$2.4m donation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Netherlands government handed down on Friday
\na US$2.4 million donation to the Jakarta-based Community Recovery
\nProgram through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).<\/p>\n
Netherlands Deputy Ambassador D.S.M. Berendsen and UNDP
\nResident Representative Ravi Rajan signed the arrangement at the
\nUNDP offices.<\/p>\n
The donation is aimed at increasing food security, basic and
\nsocial services, creating jobs and generating income for
\nvulnerable segments of society.<\/p>\n
The Community Recovery Program (CRP) -- a consortium of 27
\nnon-governmental organizations including Bina Desa, the
\nIndonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi), the Institute for
\nResearch, Education and Information on Social Economics (LP3ES)
\nand the Institute for Research and Development (LPPS) -- was
\nformed in the middle of last year to support small-scale
\ninstitutions in various sectors on community development,
\nenvironmental protection, technology and education.<\/p>\n
Rajan said he hoped the donation would enable civil society to
\nplay "a constructive and dynamic role" in the years ahead. Also
\npresent at the event were former environment minister Emil Salim
\nand Sri Pamoedjo Rahardjo, now chairman and executive director
\nrespectively of the CRP National Council.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands government also contributed a $153.7-million
\nloan through the Consultative Group on Indonesia in the current
\nfinancial year to eradicate poverty and support democratization
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Last year CRP received commitments of $1.6 million in
\nassistance for project activities from Britain, New Zealand and
\nthe UNDP. (06)<\/p>",
