        "content": "<p>Nepal rescue focused on workers trapped in three tunnels<\/p>\n<p>At least 11 hydropower projects were engulfed when a glacier\ncollapsed into a river on the Nepal-China border on Aug 26, burying the\nentrances to the tunnels of these projects under debris and mud and\ncutting off those trapped inside.<\/p>\n<p>KATHMANDU: Rescuers in Nepal are focusing on three hydropower project\ntunnels where they believe dozens of workers could be trapped,\nauthorities said on Tuesday (Sep 8), two weeks after a devastating flood\nkilled hundreds and left thousands missing in the Himalayan country and\nin neighbouring China\u2019s Tibet region.<\/p>\n<p>At least 11 hydropower projects were engulfed when a glacier\ncollapsed into a river on the Nepal-China border on Aug 26, burying the\nentrances to the tunnels of these projects under debris and mud and\ncutting off those trapped inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur search operation is focused on finding survivors, including in\ntunnels. Our bigger focus is on the Chilime hydroelectric project, where\nwe believe people are trapped, because there was a canteen, residency\nand arrangements for food,\u201d Dharma Raj Upreti, chief of the country\u2019s\ndisaster authority, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Teams were also focused on tunnels of the Upper Trishuli 3A and 3B\nprojects, which are linked by an interconnected tunnel, said Upreti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOxygen has been supplied to these tunnels through pipes and we have\nsent new equipment needed for the operation (to open a passage into\nthem),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nepal\u2019s Prime Minister Balendra Shah vowed there would be no let-up\nin the rescue operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know our responsibility and its sensitivity. We are translating\nthe humanitarian spirit of the Nepali people into practice through the\nsearch and rescue operation,\u201d he said in a social media post late on\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>About 121 of a total 900 people missing from the hydroelectric\nprojects could have been trapped in these tunnels, army rescuers said on\nMonday, while others may have been working elsewhere at the power plants\nbut not inside the vast network of tunnels.<\/p>\n<p>In recent days, search teams have rescued four people, including a\nChinese national who was pulled from a tunnel on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The others were two hydropower workers rescued from another tunnel on\nFriday and a Nepali woman pulled out from her buried house on\nSaturday.<\/p>\n<p>At least 1,399 people have been killed by the mudslide and more than\n5,400 are missing in Nepal and Tibet. The toll includes 43 people who\ndied on the Chinese side and 519 missing there, as of Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>None of the bodies retrieved in Tibet were those of foreign\nnationals, China\u2019s state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Both China and Nepal have said climate change was responsible for the\nglacier collapse which triggered the flooding.<\/p>",
