Nepal marks national mourning day after deadly flood<\/p>\n
Four people have been rescued in Nepal in recent days as search teams\nrace to find more than 5,500 people still missing.<\/p>\n
KATHMANDU: Grief-stricken Nepalis entered the traditional Hindu last\nday of mourning on Monday (Sep 7) for the hundreds who died in the\ncatastrophic flood along the country\u2019s border with China even as the\ngovernment kept search operations going after four miracle rescues in\nrecent days.<\/p>\n
Government offices in the Hindu-majority nation of 30 million people\nand at missions abroad would fly the national flag at half-mast to mark\nthe 13th day after death, the home ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The day is considered the final day of mourning by the faithful, who\ncommemorate it with rituals and food offerings.<\/p>\n
A huge wall of mud and rock, triggered by a glacier breaking off,\ncollapsed into a river on the Himalayan border of Nepal and China\u2019s\nTibet on Aug 26, washing away towns and villages and burying roads and\nhighways under piles of mud and debris.<\/p>\n
At least 1,380 people have been killed by the mudslide and more than\n5,500 are missing.<\/p>\n
In recent days, search teams in Nepal have rescued four people,\nincluding a Chinese national who was pulled from a tunnel on\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
The others were two hydropower workers rescued from another tunnel on\nFriday and a Nepali woman pulled out from her buried house on\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Rescue operations in Nepal were focused on hydropower stations in the\nregion, army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet said, where authorities\nbelieve there might still be survivors.<\/p>\n
Chinese officials said on Sunday that workers had recovered 12 more\nbodies as the search continued for hundreds still missing in Tibet.<\/p>\n
NO CEREMONIES AMID ONGOING SEARCH<\/p>\n
With search teams still looking for survivors, the government has not\nplanned any wider events for the final day of mourning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no government programmes organised as the rescue and\nsearch operation is still going on in the flood-hit areas,\u201d Phanindra\nPaudel of the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) told\nReuters.<\/p>\n
President Ram Chandra Paudel, the ceremonial head of state, was\ntouring flood-hit areas on Monday and would survey damage caused by the\ndisaster, his aide said.<\/p>\n
Security personnel at the district jail in Nuwakot, one of the two\nworst-affected districts, saved 923 prisoners by shifting them to a\nbuilding in a higher location before flood waters entered their\nlow-lying building, Prime Minister Balendra Shah said in a social media\npost.<\/p>\n
