Kathmandu (ANTARA) - Nepal\u2019s Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, stated\nthat satellite data and other monitoring information shared by China\nfollowing devastating landslides is supporting ongoing disaster response\nefforts in Nepal and helping authorities monitor further risks that\ncould cause additional damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina almost always provides real-time information to Nepal so that\nwe can remain vigilant against potential future disasters,\u201d Khanal told\nXinhua in an exclusive interview on Wednesday (2\/9).<\/p>\n
According to Khanal, China expressed support for Nepal at various\nlevels immediately after the disaster. He noted that when needs arose,\nNepal requested humanitarian supplies and technical assistance from\nChina, to which the Chinese side responded positively.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very grateful for the highly proactive support that the\nChinese government has provided to us at this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Khanal called for stronger Nepal-China cooperation in studying,\npreserving, and restoring the Himalayan ecosystem, as well as in\npreparing for similar risks in the future.<\/p>\n
The Chinese government has provided emergency cash assistance and\nhumanitarian aid to Nepal, sending three batches of supplies to\nKathmandu, and deploying tunnel rescue and DNA identification experts to\nsupport relief efforts in Nepal.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, the Chinese government has provided us with all forms of\nsupport,\u201d said Khanal.<\/p>\n
Khanal noted that rescue operations remain extremely difficult\nbecause roads and bridges leading to the affected areas are severely\ndamaged, leaving some regions entirely inaccessible by land.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur people active in the rescue operations are facing difficulties,\nbut they continue to work to save lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that hundreds of Nepali citizens who were on the Chinese\nside of the border for trade or tourism at the time of the disaster have\nbeen identified and well-accommodated by Chinese authorities. He added\nthat Nepal is prepared to assist any Chinese citizens affected on the\nNepali side.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe always say that our two countries are connected by mountains and\nrivers,\u201d Khanal said, adding that the disasters affecting both sides of\nthe border demonstrate how closely the two nations are linked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis disaster shows us that our destinies are intertwined,\u201d said\nKhanal.<\/p>\n
Khanal expressed hope that Nepal and China would jointly call upon\nnations worldwide to address the challenges posed by rising temperatures\nand climate change, and their impact on the ecosystems of both\ncountries.<\/p>\n
