Neighborhood security system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sjafrie
\nSjamsoeddin has urged city residents to improve security in their
\nresidential areas in a bid to help fight disturbances,
\nparticularly riots and burglaries.<\/p>\n
Sjafrie said in a statement yesterday that the system was also
\naimed at improving people's alertness to face the rising number
\nof groundless rumors.<\/p>\n
He said that if rioting erupted, residents, especially males,
\nshould gather under the coordination of the neighborhood chief.
\nThey should arm themselves with sticks and flashlights.<\/p>\n
\"It's better for the residents to divide themselves into three
\ngroups: the first group is in charge of closing the housing
\ncomplex's gates, the second in charge of driving away rioters and
\nhanding over those caught to nearby military or police stations
\nand the last group to safeguard other residents, especially women
\nand children, and housing facilities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The neighborhood chiefs are required to immediately report the
\nincidents to the local alert post or nearby security offices
\nthrough toll-free phone number 122.<\/p>\n
After the rioting, residents should continue to look after
\ntheir neighborhoods, clean up the litter and repair damages
\ncaused by the riots.<\/p>\n
Sjafrie said these steps could also be applied by the
\nresidents to counter threats of robberies or burglaries. (jun)<\/p>",
