Neighbor unfazed S'pore's high-tech<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore officials are not worried by the
\nthreat of being overtaken by neighboring Malaysia as an
\ninformation technology (IT) leader, the Straits Times reported
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
National Computer Board chief executive Stephen Yeo was quoted
\nas saying that Singapore enjoys superior infrastructure and a
\nhigh rate of computer literacy among its three million people.<\/p>\n
Malaysia, which has a population of 20 million, is building a
\n\"multimedia super corridor\" off the capital Kuala Lumpur, and is
\nperceived to be stepping up efforts to overtake Singapore as
\nSoutheast Asia's IT capital.<\/p>\n
The Singapore government is in the process of integrating the
\nentire island into a high-capacity multimedia cable network
\ncapable of carrying television, cable TV and Internet signals to
\na wall socket in every home.<\/p>\n
Later this year, Singapore is expected to be one of the first
\ncountries in the world to implement secure credit card
\ntransactions via the Internet.<\/p>",
