Neglected railroad<\/p>\n
I went to Magelang, Central Java, recently via Purwokerto and
\nWonosobo. Wonosobo is a very fertile area with fresh air and cool
\nclimate. Vegetables such cabbage, potatoes and tobacco are among
\nthe main agricultural products.<\/p>\n
On either side of the road, especially between Banjarnegara
\nand Wonosobo, I saw beautiful scenery, picturesque valleys and
\nthe clear river, Serayu.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, those beauties are spoiled by the nasty look of
\nruins of unused railway stations and neglected railroads. I
\nlamented the situation. How can the railway company afford to
\nignore such a valuable asset? It has been said that the economic
\ncrisis forced the authority to curtail operations, in order to
\navoid financial losses.<\/p>\n
Actually there are good reasons for keeping the railroad
\nfunctioning.<\/p>\n
* To help the farmers transport their merchandise.<\/p>\n
* To promote tourism, because tourists wanting to visit the
\nDieng plateau would find it more interesting to enjoy the
\nbeautiful panoramas by riding in a train.<\/p>\n
* To reduce traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
My suggestion is that the government make a concerted effort
\nto restore the 90-km railroad from Purwokerto to Wonosobo, or
\nleave the business to the private sector.<\/p>\n
