NEC launches RI semiconductor plant<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Japan's NEC Corporation officially launched
\nyesterday its US$45 million semiconductor plant in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The plant, officially opened by Minister of Industry and Trade
\nTunky Ariwibowo, is operated by PT NEC Humpuss Semiconductors
\nIndonesia, a joint venture of NEC Corp., Humpuss Elektronika and
\nSumitomo Corporation.<\/p>\n
Masaru Nakagiri, Humpuss Semiconductors' president, said the
\nassembly plant was built in 1995 with investment of about $45
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
He said the plant in Bekasi, West Java, was the first
\nJapanese-Indonesian semiconductor joint venture. It was
\nofficially established in September 1995.<\/p>\n
The plant began production in January this year. Its
\nproduction target is 15 million ICs and 100 million Signal
\nTransistors a month, he said.<\/p>\n
These are used in personal computers, televisions, VCRs and
\nother home electronic products.<\/p>\n
He said NEC had an ambitious five year plan for the plant,
\nwith the company eventually employing 600 staff and annual sales
\nof $45 million.<\/p>\n
"It plans to continue financial and technical investments by
\nintroducing high technology products, such as microcomputers and
\nASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits)," he said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government had long been nurturing the growth
\nof high-tech industries here, and this was an influential factor
\nin NEC participating in a joint venture here, he said.<\/p>\n
"NEC's global semiconductors strategy is for production and
\nsales functions to be located in each of its markets. With this
\nin mind, NEC entered into the joint venture with PT Humpuss
\nElektronika and Sumitomo Corporation," he said.<\/p>\n
"The joint venture brought together the strength of the three
\npartners to achieve their long term goals," said Hishashi Kaneko,
\nNEC's president.<\/p>\n
The addition of PT NEC Humpuss Semiconductors Indonesia to the
\nNEC global Semiconductors Group brings the number of its plants
\nin Asia to four, enhancing NEC's position as the second largest
\nsemiconductor company in the world.<\/p>\n
Besides strengthening NEC's global production network, NEC
\nwants the joint venture to contribute to the economic and
\ntechnological progress of Indonesia and the Asian region. (13)<\/p>",
