        "content": "<p>Navy told to heed personnel<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA (JP): President Soeharto told the Navy yesterday that<br>\nalthough its equipment is continuously modernized, it should<br>\nnever neglect its human resources.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Navy needs personnel who are strongly committed to the<br>\nArmed Forces' oaths,\" he said when addressing the 51st<br>\ncommemoration of Naval Fleet Day.<\/p>\n<p>The President, who is the country's supreme commander of the<br>\nArmed Forces, said the Navy needs more sophisticated equipment to<br>\nsafeguard Indonesia's vast archipelagic territory.<\/p>\n<p>On hand were Vice President Try Sutrisno, Armed Forces Chief<br>\nGen. Feisal Tanjung, Navy chief Vice Admiral Arief Kushariadi,<br>\nMinister\/State Secretary Moerdiono and Minister of Tourism, Post<br>\nand Telecommunications Joop Ave.<\/p>\n<p>After addressing the ceremony, Soeharto also inaugurated a 31-<br>\nmeter-tall monument called Jalesveva Jayamahe located on top of a<br>\n29-meter-tall building overlooking the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The 360-ton bronze monument, built by well-known sculptor<br>\nNyoman Nuarta, portrays a dedicated marine who is prepared for<br>\nany challenge standing in his way.<\/p>\n<p>The monument, located in Dermaga Ujung, houses a diorama on<br>\nthe history of the Indonesian Navy.<\/p>\n<p>Marking the dedication of the monument, the President struck a<br>\ngong. Five meters in diameter, the 2.4-ton brass gong is believed<br>\nto be the world's largest.<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto awarded Jalesena Nararia medals to four<br>\nofficers -- Maj. Nur Khamid, First Lt. Indropraptono, Sgt. Maj.<br>\nWismo and Chief Corporal Paul Monica -- for their 24 years of<br>\ndedication to the Navy. (25\/pan)<\/p>",
