Navy orders marine corps to verify Sunday shoot-out<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Indroko Sastrowiryono
\nsaid on Monday he had ordered marine corps chief Maj. Gen. Harry
\nTriono to investigate a Sunday shoot-out in Senen, Central
\nJakarta, which claimed the life of a marine.<\/p>\n
"The marine who was shot was trying to settle some debts. I
\nhave ordered the marine corps chief to verify what actually
\nhappened there, and to take stern action," Indroko said following
\na meeting with Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri at her
\noffice in Central Jakarta on Monday.<\/p>\n
"It was the marine's personal problem. The incident has
\nnothing to do with the marine corps as an institution," he added.<\/p>\n
Marine corps Chief Sgt. Aliman was reportedly shot dead by a
\nCentral Jakarta Police officer First Adj. Insp. Agus Sunardi,
\nwho, along with two civilians, suffered gunshot wounds in the
\ndramatic Sunday fire exchange at a grocery store located in the
\nAnsor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) building on Jl. Kramat Raya,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
GP Ansor is the youth wing of the Nadhlatul Ulama (NU), the
\nlargest Muslim organization in the country.<\/p>\n
The incident was initially handled by the Central Jakarta
\nPolice, before the case was transferred to the city garrison.<\/p>\n
Sources in the Central Jakarta Police identified the civilians
\nas Rustam and Silvester.<\/p>\n
The sources added that five people had been questioned as
\nwitnesses in connection with the shoot-out.<\/p>\n
They were identified as Iswanto, the NU auxiliary group
\n(Banser) chief for Karang Tengah district in Demak, Central Java;
\nHadi Suryadi, a cashier at the minimarket; Saefuddin, the
\nassistant manager of the minimarket; Abdul Manan, a cleaner at
\nthe GP Ansor office; and Robert, an eyewitness to the incident.<\/p>\n
The source said the incident began when the Ansor chief for
\nDemak, Ashadi, and Iswanto took Aliman to meet with the Ansor
\nchief in Jakarta, Aris Junaidi, at 6 p.m. on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The source said they wanted to meet with Aris to discuss hotel
\nbills, but the discussion soon turned violent.<\/p>\n
Aliman then got two Banser members, Rustam and Silvester, who
\nwere present in the Ansor office, to help calm the situation.<\/p>\n
The source at the Central Jakarta Police confirmed that the
\ndiscussion was about paying bills at hotels in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"Several people allegedly stayed in hotels on Jl. Jaksa while
\nin Jakarta to take part in mass protests. So Iswanto, Ashadi and
\nAliman expected Aris to pay the bills," a source said.<\/p>\n
Separately, marine corps spokesman Lt. Col. Ibrahim Saddong
\nsaid Aliman had accompanied Iswanto and Ashadi to demand "payment
\nfor hotel bills on Jl. Jaksa".<\/p>\n
Denial<\/p>\n
The secretary-general of the Ansor Youth Movement, Ahmad Niam
\nSalim, denied on Monday the organization was involved in any way
\nin the shoot-out.<\/p>\n
"We have to make it clear that our organization is not related
\nat all with what happened. It was a personal problem which turned
\ninto a crime," Ahmad said. He admitted, though, that Aliman was
\nAshadi's brother.<\/p>\n
Another police source said that inside the grocery store,
\nAliman and Banser members Rustam and Silvester became involved in
\na verbal quarrel.<\/p>\n
"Suddenly, Aliman took out a gun and shot both Rustam and
\nSilvester, to the shock of everybody present. Someone immediately
\ncalled the police," the source said.<\/p>\n
City police records state that Silvester was shot in the left
\nside of his head, in the chest and his left hand, while Rustam
\nwas shot in the shoulder. Both are being treated at Saint Carolus
\nHospital in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"The police call on Sunday was taken by First. Brig. Roni.
\nRoni arrived at the scene, saw Aliman and tried to speak with
\nAliman, who was already outside the Ansor office. Aliman started
\nwaving a gun in Roni's face ... Agus Sunardi happened to be
\nshopping in the area," the source said.<\/p>\n
Agus, the source said, snuck behind Aliman and grabbed Aliman
\naround the neck, but Aliman was able to turn around and shoot
