Navy impounds fishing vessels<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: Four vessels manned by Thai crews have
\nbeen detained by the Indonesian Navy after they were found in
\nviolation of their fishing permits, a Navy officer said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The KM Lautan I, KM Lautan II, KM Jawa Indah and
\nKM Penang VI were caught going beyond permitted exploitation
\nareas in Indonesia's territorial waters, spokesman of the Navy's
\nEastern Fleet, Lt. Col. Eddy Irawan, was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
Irawan said the vessels were seen dropping anchor in areas not
\nspecified in their fishing permits as the Indonesian warship, KRI
\nKakap 811, patrolled the Karimata Straits.<\/p>\n
He said the ships were empty but were suspected of illegal
\nfishing as their nets were ready for casting.<\/p>\n
All crew members were Thai nationals, he added.<\/p>\n
The vessels were brought to the naval station in Kuala Buang,
\nSamuda, Sampit in South Kalimantan province, but will be moved to
\nthe Banjarmasin Naval Base for further investigation, Irawan
