Navy base to be upgraded<\/p>\n

\nSecurity concerns have prompted Navy Headquarters to upgrade a
\nnaval base in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province, and raise its
\nsecurity status. The upgrade will enable the base to step up
\nmeasures against illegal fishing and fuel smuggling in areas
\nbordering Indonesia, Australia and East Timor, a military officer
\nsaid on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The status upgrade will be made official on Thursday in a
\nceremony in Kupang, said Kupang naval base commander Col. Ari
\nAtmadja. The ceremony will be led by Navy Chief of Staff Adm.
\nSlamet Soebijanto.<\/p>\n
The upgrade will also result in a reshuffle in the naval base
\nleadership, with First. Adm. Syahrin Abdurrahman replacing Col.
\nAri Atmadja as base chief.<\/p>\n
The base will get several warships and patrol ships as well as
\nsurveillance equipment in help it better detect security threats
\nand increase the capability of the Navy to uncover illegal
\nactivities in its waters and capture the offenders, such as fuel
\nsmugglers.<\/p>\n
It will also enhance the Navy's capability to deal with
\ntrespassers in Indonesian waters, said Col. Ari.<\/p>\n
The main Kupang naval base will still oversee waters in East
\nNusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and Maluku province.<\/p>\n
Separately, Udayana Military Commander Maj. Gen. Zamroni,
\noverseeing East Nusa Tenggara, said the Army would not follow
\nsuit by upgrading the Wirasakti Military Command, which oversees
\nBali and East Nusa Tenggara province.<\/p>",
