Naughty developers get warning<\/p>\n
The House Commission IX on education has threatened to bring
\nto court delinquent real estate developers who do not build
\neducational facilities for their housing complexes.<\/p>\n
\"Developers must not put too much emphasis on profits and
\nignore the community's need for education,\" warned Sukowaluyo
\nMintorahardjo, the deputy chairman of the commission.<\/p>\n
Some new residential complexes on the outskirts of Jakarta,
\nsuch as Bekasi, Depok and Tangerang, are not equipped with
\nadequate educational facilities for school-age children (seven to
\n12 years old) living in the complexes.<\/p>\n
A number of elementary schools in Bekasi were reported to have
\nbeen forced to accommodate school children beyond their seat
\ncapacities. Some schools were reported to have resorted to three
\nlearning shifts to accommodate the overwhelming number of school
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
This problem, Sukowati said, was caused by the high number of
\nJakartans who have moved to new residential areas on the
\noutskirts which do not provide an adequate number of schools for
\ntheir children.<\/p>\n
This problem also showed poor control of the government
\nagencies involved in educational affairs, he was quoted by Antara
\nas saying Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Sukowati said the city administration and the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture have not properly handled this problem.<\/p>\n
As a result, a school in a certain region had to be closed
\ndown because of lack of pupils, while another one in another
\nregion had to introduce three shifts because they had too many
