        "content": "<p>Naturalist&apos;s house in ruin<\/p>\n<p>TERNATE, Maluku: The house of 19th century British naturalist<br>\nAlfred Russel Wallace in this North Maluku regency is in ruin<br>\nbecause of neglect, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Education and Culture and local authorities<br>\nare responsible for maintaining the historical house where<br>\nWallace created an imaginary line connecting the eastern<br>\nPhilippines, Bali and Lombok where there are similar animal<br>\nspecies.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace reportedly thought of this line while he was in the<br>\nhouse in bed with malaria.<\/p>\n<p>Wallace, 1823-1913, spent eight years in the archipelago<br>\nstudying its flora and fauna, collecting more than 125,000<br>\nspecimens and writing several books. One book, The Malaya<br>\nArchipelago, published 1869, expounded his theory about the<br>\nimaginary line.<\/p>\n<p>Syafruddin Mohammad from the local tourist office lamented the<br>\nneglect, saying that the piece of heritage should have been<br>\npreserved better as a tourist attraction.
