Naturalist's house in ruin<\/p>\n
TERNATE, Maluku: The house of 19th century British naturalist
\nAlfred Russel Wallace in this North Maluku regency is in ruin
\nbecause of neglect, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Education and Culture and local authorities
\nare responsible for maintaining the historical house where
\nWallace created an imaginary line connecting the eastern
\nPhilippines, Bali and Lombok where there are similar animal
\nspecies.<\/p>\n
Wallace reportedly thought of this line while he was in the
\nhouse in bed with malaria.<\/p>\n
Wallace, 1823-1913, spent eight years in the archipelago
\nstudying its flora and fauna, collecting more than 125,000
\nspecimens and writing several books. One book, The Malaya
\nArchipelago, published 1869, expounded his theory about the
\nimaginary line.<\/p>\n
Syafruddin Mohammad from the local tourist office lamented the
\nneglect, saying that the piece of heritage should have been
\npreserved better as a tourist attraction. (swe)<\/p>",
