"summary": "The Natuna Regency government in Riau Islands Province has launched a weather modification operation since 2 April 2026 to combat drought and forest and land fires in the area, focusing on enhancing rainfall to extinguish hard-to-reach hotspots. Supported by aerial patrols and previous water bombing via helicopter, this initiative aims to accelerate fire control and prevent further spread amid challenging terrain. The combined efforts highlight local authorities' proactive response to environmental threats in remote regions.",
"content": "<p>Natuna (ANTARA) - The Natuna Regency Government (Pemkab Natuna), Riau\nIslands Province, is conducting a weather modification operation (OMC)\nto address drought and forest and land fires (karhutla) in the region.\nThe Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Natuna\nRegency, Raja Darmika, confirmed from Bintan on Friday that the\noperation began on 2 April 2026 and is ongoing. OMC involves the planned\nmanipulation of weather conditions, such as increasing rainfall. In\nNatuna, this operation is focused on boosting rain intensity to help\nextinguish fire points and mitigate drought impacts. According to him,\nthis step is necessary due to fire points that are difficult to access\nby land routes, requiring aerial intervention to expedite handling. In\naddition to OMC, Pemkab Natuna has received support through aerial\noperations involving firefighting with helicopters using water bombing\nmethods. However, water bombing operations are not being conducted today\ndue to the relatively small and thinly spread fires. He added that the\ncombination of weather modification operations and aerial patrols is\nexpected to accelerate karhutla control and prevent the fires from\nspreading further in Natuna.<\/p>",
