Natuna (ANTARA) - The geopark, or earth park, in Natuna Regency, Riau\nIslands Province, has become a candidate for Aspiring UNESCO Global\nGeopark (UGGp).<\/p>\n
The Secretary II of the National Geopark Management Agency (BPGN)\nNatuna, Ryannaldo, confirmed from Natuna on Friday that the Natuna\nGeopark had previously been recognised nationally and is now being\nproposed to obtain international recognition from UNESCO.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Natuna Geopark has passed the administrative\nstage and is now entering the Aspiring UGGp stage, which is the stage\ntowards official UNESCO recognition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year, there are two geoparks that are candidates, namely Natuna\nand Tambora,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that on Wednesday (13\/5), the Natuna Geopark team had\npresented various advantages of the area, development plans, and\nchallenges faced by the region to the Indonesian UGGp assessment team,\nthe national expert council, and related ministries through an online\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough Zoom, we presented the potential of the Natuna Geopark along\nwith its development strategy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
From the results of the presentation, the assessment team and the\nexpert council provided several inputs to strengthen the material for\nthe Natuna Geopark proposal to be recognised by UNESCO.<\/p>\n
Some of the suggestions given include strengthening the main theme of\nthe geopark, improving the thematic map, increasing the publication of\nNatuna\u2019s distinctive geogastronomy, strengthening networks and\npartnerships, and maintaining consistency in education and environmental\npreservation programmes in the geosite area.<\/p>\n
Ryannaldo added that after passing the aspiring stage, the next\nprocess is to submit an assessment to UNESCO, which will be followed by\nan evaluation and presentation in front of UNESCO assessors.<\/p>\n
He explained that if recognised by UNESCO, the Natuna geopark will be\nbetter known worldwide. This will increase tourist visits, economic\ngrowth, strengthen preservation, and improve the image of the\nregion.<\/p>\n
