The National Library (Perpusnas) is using the momentum of Indonesian\nLibrarian Day 2026 to introduce a new brand for librarians as lifelong\nlearners. Through this step, Perpusnas affirms the role of librarians as\ndrivers of literacy, guardians of knowledge, and agents of lifelong\nlearning amidst developments in science, technology, and artificial\nintelligence (AI).<\/p>\n
\u201cToday\u2019s librarians are no longer seen as keepers of bookshelves.\nThey are connectors between society and knowledge, companions in\nlifelong learning, and drivers of a literacy culture. Therefore,\nIndonesian Librarian Day is a momentum to further strengthen the role of\nlibrarians as agents of change in Indonesia\u2019s human resource\ndevelopment,\u201d said Head of Perpusnas E. Aminudin Aziz in a statement in\nJakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to Aminudin, the transformation of the librarian profession\nmust begin with a change in perspective towards the profession. The new\nbrand of librarians as lifelong learners encourages human resources in\nthis profession to become individuals who continuously learn, develop,\nand provide benefits to society.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to build a new brand that librarians are lifelong learners\nwho continuously learn, grow, and benefit society. This profession must\nbe known not for guarding books, but for bringing knowledge to life,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
As a manifestation of this transformation, Perpusnas is encouraging\nthe strengthening of four main characteristics of librarians: always\nbeing at the forefront of acquiring new knowledge, being present to help\nthe community, becoming heirs of civilisation, and being influencers who\ninspire a learning culture within society. These four characteristics\nreflect the transformation of the librarian\u2019s role, which is no longer\nlimited to collection management but has evolved into learning\nfacilitators, guardians of the nation\u2019s collective memory, and knowledge\ncommunicators capable of answering the challenges of the digital\nera.<\/p>\n
\u201cA nation that wants to advance needs librarians who are always\nlearning. When librarians stop learning, libraries will lose their\nrelevance. Conversely, when librarians continue to grow, libraries will\nalways be homes of knowledge capable of meeting society\u2019s needs,\u201d said\nAminudin.<\/p>\n
Strengthening library human resources is an important foundation for\nthe transformation of the librarian profession. Data from the Librarian\nDevelopment Centre of Perpusnas as of July 2026 recorded 5,593\nlibrarians throughout Indonesia, the majority of whom are librarians and\nlibrary staff with a library science background (74.95 percent), with a\ncomposition of positions dominated by First Expert Librarians and Junior\nExpert Librarians.<\/p>\n
Perpusnas also continues to strengthen the presence of librarians in\nthe community through the Perpusnas Service Day Programme, which\nencourages librarians to provide assistance to school libraries,\nuniversities, public libraries, special libraries, village\/sub-district\nlibraries, and community reading gardens.<\/p>\n
Aminudin invited all Indonesian librarians to make Indonesian\nLibrarian Day a momentum to strengthen professionalism, expand\ncollaboration, and continuously improve competence. \u201cWhen librarians\ncontinuously increase their capacity and provide benefits to society, we\nare essentially building the foundation for a smarter, more cultured,\nand more competitive Indonesia.
