National Library gets priceless slides<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Lontar Foundation presented yesterday more
\nthan 300 slides of images from illuminated manuscripts on
\nIndonesian writing traditions to the National Library.<\/p>\n
Foundation chairperson Adila Suwarno Soepeno said the 297-page
\nbook Illuminations: The Writing Traditions of Indonesia was
\npublished in English.<\/p>\n
It took four years to compile the book that was launched six
\nmonths ago by President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Adila said the slides which cost Rp 100 million (US$42,000) to
\nproduce had priceless historical value.<\/p>\n
She said the US$250,000 publication project was financed by
\nthe Lontar Foundation, Ford Foundation and Rajawali Corporation
\nin cooperation with Garuda Indonesia Airways.<\/p>\n
John McGlynn, one of Lontar Foundation's founders and the co-
\neditor of Illuminations, said the Indonesian edition was
\nexpected next year.<\/p>\n
Asked if it was possible to publish the book in CD-ROM
\neditions, multimedia and virtual reality, McGlynn said he thought
\nsuch a project would be hampered by lack of funding and technical
\nproblems, such as protection from hacking.<\/p>\n
McGlynn said that 50 percent of the slides in the book were
\ncompiled from the Library, the Sonobudoyo Museum, other
\ncollections in Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Bali, while the
\nremainder were obtained from Britain and Leiden, The Netherlands.<\/p>\n
Of the 5,000 copies printed, 1,000 are available overseas
\nthrough the Weatherhill publishing company in New York while the
\nremainder are available locally. (01)<\/p>",
