National exam not educational<\/p>\n

The controversy on whether the government should hold the
\nnational exam continues, involving not only educational experts,
\nlaymen, politicians and bureaucrats but also the country's Vice
\nPresident. Jusuf Kalla told one Jakarta's newspapers that the
\nnational examination would be an effective instrument to improve
\nIndonesia's human resources, which are currently poorly educated.<\/p>\n
In the House of Representatives, however, the debate on this
\nmatter centers more on the legal aspects of the examination
\nrather than on its usefulness and ability to boost the quality of
\nthe country's human resources. House members believe that this
\nnational exam violates Law No. 20\/2004 on the national education
\nsystem.<\/p>\n
The purpose of education in Indonesia -- according to the
\nstipulation of the People's Consultative Assembly, the law and so
\nforth -- is not to prepare students for the national examination
\nbut to fully develop Indonesians. That's why if the national exam
\nis included in the national education system, students will only
\nfocus their attention on how to pass this exam. They will study
\nhard only to reach the standards set in the exam so that they can
\njoin good schools later.<\/p>\n
A fully developed person -- the goal of Indonesia's national
\neducation system -- is a person that believes in God and has a
\nnoble mind. He must be skillful, healthy -- mentally and
\nphysically -- independent and responsible. He also must be a good
\ncitizen. How can a student become a fully developed person if
\ntheir quality is measured only from the result of a three-day
\nexam?<\/p>\n
