National Awakening Day trophies presented<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Indonesian Journalists (PWI)
\nyesterday conferred five awards for this year's best articles
\nabout National Awakening.<\/p>\n
The Harkitnas Award, named after National Awakening Day which
\nfalls on May 20, is considered one of the most prestigious press
\nawards after the Adinegoro award.<\/p>\n
Suara Pembaruan, a Jakarta afternoon daily newspaper, received
\nthe award for best editorial in commenting on the significance of
\nNational Awakening Day with this year's 50th national
\nindependence anniversary.<\/p>\n
Hendro Basuki, a journalist with the Suara Merdeka daily in
\nSemarang, won the general category for his article that linked
\ntax, nationalism and democratization.<\/p>\n
I.B. Sudiarta, a journalist at the Nusa Tenggara daily in
\nDenpasar, won the reporting category with his article portraying
\nthe lives of villagers in Pangembangan, Bali, amidst a stench of
\nfish.<\/p>\n
Fachrul Rasyid, a reporter at the Gatra news weekly in
\nJakarta, was given the special category award for his recent
\narticle about Sulasih, Indonesia's first woman author, who died
\nlast Saturday at the age of 87.<\/p>\n
The best writing for the history category was won by Tjoet Lam
\nof Higina, a health magazine in Jakarta, for his article on the
\nlate president Sukarno.<\/p>\n
The award is jointly sponsored by PWI, the Ministry of
\nInformation and the Institute of National Resilience
\n(Lemhannas)<\/p>\n
Parni Hadi, PWI's Secretary General and Program Director of
\nthe Harkitnas award contest announced the winners, each of whom
\nwon Rp 750,000 ($325) in cash, and a trophy.<\/p>\n
Director for Press and Graphics Subrata, representing Minister
\nof Information Harmoko, called on PWI to include television and
\nradio reporters in future selection.<\/p>\n
He recalled that PWI in its congress last year agreed to begin
\nadmitting television and radio reporters into its membership and
\nto draw up a new code of ethics governing the profession, both in
