Nasution recuperates after surgery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Retired Gen. Abdul Haris Nasution, a respected
\nsenior Indonesian military figure, is recuperating following
\nminor surgery at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital.<\/p>\n
Nasution underwent prostate surgery Thursday, according to
\nSuara Pembaruan yesterday. Dr. Fritz Kakiailatu, who is also a
\nmember of President Soeharto's medical team, conducted the
\noperation.<\/p>\n
"I feel much better now, and thank you for the visit,"
\nNasution was quoted by Antara as saying. He also expressed
\ngratitude for the care and attention given to him by his juniors,
\ngenerals who are still in active duty. Antara did not identify
\nthe generals, but said Nasution looked refreshed and was still
\nsaying his daily prayers.<\/p>\n
The 78-year-old general, whose illustrious military career
\nincluded roles such as Armed Forces chief of staff and later
\ndefense minister during president Sukarno's administration, fell
\nill after exerting himself receiving guests during the Idul Fitri
\nholiday last Sunday.<\/p>\n
"Many relatives and friends came to pay him a visit, some of
\nthem came to discuss the country's current situation," his wife
\nJohana Nasution was quoted as saying by the daily.<\/p>\n
"His mind was always busy. He miscalculated his physical
\ncondition and so became ill again," she said.<\/p>\n
Nasution was admitted to hospital Wednesday. He was suffering
\nfrom an inflammation of the prostate. In addition, his rheumatism
\nhad worsened, forcing him to use a walking stick, according to
\nhis wife.<\/p>\n
"It's the latter illness that really limits his movements,"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Nasution, perhaps the most prominent member of the ostracized
\ngroup of government critics known as Petisi 50, was once chairman
\nof the Provisional People's Consultative Assembly which stripped
\npresident Sukarno of power in 1967. The body later swore Soeharto
