        "content": "<p>Nasi island for GAM detention center<\/p>\n<p>The Aceh martial law administration has chosen Nasi island, just <br>\nnorth of the provincial capital Banda Aceh, as the center for <br>\nprocessing detainees from the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) <br>\nbefore they face trial.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian Military's (TNI) chief of general affairs Lt. Gen. <br>\nDjamari Chaniago told journalists in Banda Aceh that the center <br>\non the island, covering an area of 22 hectares, would be able to <br>\nhandle 1,000 detainees.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is to anticipate the increasing number of detainees in the <br>\nfuture,\" he said, adding that he expected the center to be <br>\noperational within two months.<\/p>\n<p>Djamari explained that thus far, a total of 140 GAM members <br>\nhad been arrested or surrendered to the military.<\/p>\n<p>\"So, we need a special place that can accommodate around 1,000 <br>\npeople,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nasi island used to be a GAM stronghold and was the target of <br>\na massive combined attack by the Navy, Army and Air Force last <br>\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>The island, measuring about 100 square kilometers, has around <br>\n6,500 residents.
