Nambo selected as site of new dump for Jakarta<\/p>\n

Nambo village in Bogor regency will become one of three planned
\ndumps established to solve the garbage problem in Greater
\nJakarta, which includes Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.<\/p>\n
\"A recent study made by the Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta)
\nWaste Management Cooperation (JWMC) has selected the area in
\nNambo village as one of the most feasible places for a dump,\" the
\nJakarta Urban Infrastructure Development Bureau head Mochamad
\nTauchid Tjakra Amidjaja said on Friday at City Hall.<\/p>\n
JWMC is a collaborative drive initiated by the city
\nadministrations in Greater Jakarta to handle garbage collection
\nand disposal, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of
\nPublic Works.<\/p>\n
The study made by JWMC was presented during a meeting at the
\nOffice of the State Minister of the National Development Planning
\nBoard (Bappenas) recently.<\/p>\n
\"We plan to develop three dumps, including one in West Jakarta
\nand East Jakarta. But, so far, Nambo is the most prepared,\"
\nTauchid asserted.<\/p>\n
Secretary of Commission A overseeing legal and administrative
\naffairs with the Bogor regental administration, Lulu Azhari
\nLucky, confirmed Tauchid's statement, adding that the dump would
\nuse the sanitary landfill technology, as is applied at the
\ntroubled Bantar Gebang dump in Bekasi.<\/p>\n
According to him, the planned dump will cover between 50
\nhectares and 100 hectares.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that the conversion of forest area of Nambo
\nvillage was in line with the Bogor Master Plan No. 17\/2002, which
\nstipulates Nambo as a location for a dump.<\/p>\n
No details were available on the other locations designated as
\ndumps in the east and west of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
But, Banten deputy governor Ratu Atut Chosiah announced mid-
\nlast year that her administration was also prepared to lease some
\nland in Bojong Menteng, Jawilan subdistrict in the capital of
\nBanten, Serang, to JWMC as a waste treatment facility for Jakarta
\nand Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso welcomed the plan, stressing that
\ncooperation among the city administrations in Greater Jakarta to
\ntackle garbage problem was crucial.<\/p>\n
\"Garbage is a problem that has become a major headache every
\nyear besides flooding and clean water supply,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In the last four years, Jakarta has continued to experience
\ngarbage disposal problems due to the on-and-off operation of the
\nBantar Gebang dump amid strong opposition from locals. People
\naround the dump have complained of a deterioration in the quality
\nof the environment, which has adversely affected their health.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta administration's plan along with private company
\nPT Wira Guna Sejahtera and the Bogor regental administration to
\ndevelop a waste treatment plant in Bojong, Bogor, has also hit a
\nserious snag since residents reject the presence of the plant.<\/p>\n
