        "content": "<p>NAM talks on food security in Bali<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia, in its capacity as chairman of the<br>\nNon Aligned Movement (NAM), will host a five-day ministerial<br>\nmeeting on food security in Bali beginning on Oct. 7, says<br>\nMinister of Agriculture Sjarifudin Baharsjah.<\/p>\n<p>\"President Soeharto will open the meeting,\" he told reporters<br>\nin his office here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that out of NAM's 111 countries, 30 have already<br>\nconfirmed their attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also said that representatives from Germany, the<br>\nNetherlands, Canada and Finland will attend the Bali meeting as<br>\nguest participants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he said, representatives from China and Croatia<br>\nwill attend as observers, while Director General of the Food and<br>\nAgriculture Organization (FAO) Jacques Diouf will arrive on Oct.<br>\n10 for the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Sjarifudin also explained that Director General of the<br>\nInternational Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Klaus Lampe is also<br>\nscheduled to participate in the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also cited that Indonesia will propose<br>\napprenticeship programs which will include an exchange of farmers<br>\nand agricultural experts between participants to ensure food<br>\nsecurity among NAM members.<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto was awarded a special medal by FAO in 1986<br>\ndue to his achievement in promoting food and agricultural<br>\ndevelopment. Indonesia, formerly one of the biggest rice<br>\nimporters in the world, achieved self-sufficiency in rice in<br>\n1984.<\/p>\n<p>The NAM members which have confirmed participation in the Bali<br>\nmeeting include Bangladesh, Benin, Colombia, Ethiopia, Gambia,<br>\nIraq, Iran, Seychelles, North Korea, Comoros, Syria, Ghana,<br>\nEgypt, Mali, Thailand, Sierra Leone, South Africa, India,<br>\nPakistan, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines,<br>\nMadagascar, Jordan, Togo, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and Saudi<br>\nArabia.(hdj)<\/p>",
