NAM contemporary art exhibit opens<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto will open an exhibition of
\ncontemporary art from developing countries grouped in the Non-
\nAligned Movement this morning at the Gedung Pameran Seni Rupa in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Chairwoman of the exhibit's organizing committee, Edi
\nSedyawati, told journalists after meeting President Soeharto on
\nWednesday that she has received around 350 paintings from 45 NAM
\nmember countries.<\/p>\n
Other interested member countries are still welcome to send in
\nworks of art before the exhibition ends on June 30, she said.<\/p>\n
\"We will not limit the number of paintings to be displayed,
\nnor will we limit the time of delivery. Some countries have
\nexpressed their wish to participate and have yet to send their
\nworks,\" Edi said.<\/p>\n
\"However it is clear that paintings we are going to exhibit
\nare the best in their countries,\" said Edi, who is also Director
\nGeneral of Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture.<\/p>\n
Siti Hediyati Herijadi, the fourth daughter of President
\nSoeharto and one of the organizers, said that the organizing
\ncommittee has gone to great lengths to bring the exhibition to
\nlife. The committee has even set aside special funding to handle
\nshipping arrangements for certain countries lacking resources,
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
\"We have provided return tickets and accommodation in
\nIndonesia to representatives from the poorer countries,\" said
\nSiti, who is more popularly known as Mbak Titiek.<\/p>\n
Mbak Titiek, however, refused to mention any overall budget
\nfigures.<\/p>\n
\"Not all of the 350 paintings will be insured, it much depends
\non the countries. If they think they need insurance, we will
\nprovide it,\" Edi said.<\/p>\n
Some countries have asked that the paintings be insured and
\nothers have simply lent their paintings to the organizing
\ncommittee for the occasion. (als)<\/p>",
