Nahdlatul Ulama begins final preparations for congress<\/p>\n
BAGU, West Nusa Tenggara (JP): The Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Moslem
\norganization began final preparations for its congress here
\nyesterday against the backdrop of activities held by NU rival
\nfactions.<\/p>\n
Koranic readings were held by the rival faction yesterday
\nevening throughout the island of Lombok. But these activities
\nfailed to divert attention away from preparations of proceedings
\ndue to be held by the official NU executives under the leadership
\nof Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n
The NU are due to begin a five-day meeting and congress in
\nBagu, Central Lombok.<\/p>\n
The congress will cover a wide range of issues including the
\napplication of religious laws in various modern settings.<\/p>\n
According to Mukhlis Ibrahim, head of the Ishlahuddin
\nreligious school here, topics to be discussed include cloning,
\ndemocratization laws and marital issues.<\/p>\n
NU deputy secretary general Muhidin Ambusman said experts from
\nvarious fields of discipline will also take part in the meetings
\nand provide various recommendations.<\/p>\n
But much of the attention in the countdown to the start of the
\nmeeting yesterday was the rival faction's activities.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman's leadership of the 30-million grassroots
\norganization has been challenged by Abu Hasan who has set up his
\nown rival executive board.<\/p>\n
The government has for the most part kept out of NU's internal
\naffairs and acknowledged only Abdurrahman's board.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman arrived in the provincial capital of Mataram
\nyesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n
His meeting with Governor Warsito was just a courtesy call, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Governor Warsito said he knew nothing of the activities of the
\nrival NU board in his province. "I really don't know. Maybe they
\ngot permission from the police chief."<\/p>\n
The meeting will be opened today by Minister of Religious
\nAffairs Tarmizi Taher. (43\/imn)<\/p>",
