Jakarta, VIVA \u2013 The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and\nTechnology for the 2019-2024 period, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, hopes that\nthe panel of judges will deliver a verdict of full acquittal regarding\nthe alleged Chromebook corruption case.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have only one hope from the judges\u2019 decision, which is a full\nacquittal. There is no other option,\u201d Nadiem stated to the media during\na break in the reading of the plea defence at the Corruption Court of\nthe Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He believes that various facts presented during the trial have\nsimultaneously proven his innocence, making a legal acquittal mandatory.\nHe called for honesty and conscience from the judges to decide based on\nthe facts presented in court.<\/p>\n
Legally, he maintains that all elements of the indictment have been\nrefuted. He noted that under corruption law, if even one of the four\nelements of corruption is not met, the defendant must be fully\nacquitted. Nadiument identified these four elements as: the element of\nstate loss; the element of legal violation; the element of enriching\noneself, others, or a corporation; and the element of mens rea, or\ncriminal intent. \u201cAll four elements of corruption have been broken; they\nare unproven,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nadiem was implicated as one of the defendants in the alleged\ncorruption case involving the education digitalisation programme,\nspecifically the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device\nManagement (CDM) within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research,\nand Technology between 2019 and 2022.<\/p>\n
Previously, he faced a prison sentence demand of 18 years, a fine of\nRp1 billion (subsidised by 190 days in prison), and restitution of\nRp5.67 trillion (subsidised by 9 years in prison). In this case, Nadiem\nwas accused of corruption causing state losses amounting to Rp2.18\ntrillion. The corruption allegedly involved the procurement of\ninformation and communication technology-based learning tools, namely\nChromebook laptops and CDM for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 fiscal years,\nwhich did not comply with procurement planning and principles.<\/p>\n
